KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Northbound traffic on Interstate 29/35 over Front Street will shift to new, mainline pavement Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010 following peak morning travel. Traffic had previously been detoured to temporary "shoo-fly" ramps since November 2009 during excavation and construction of a new Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI).
"Although not something motorists typically experience on an interstate, the shoo-fly ramps did enable us to keep the Front Street interchange open while we constructed the new SPUI bridge," said kcICON Project Director Brian Kidwell. "We appreciate the public's patience and cooperation as Paseo Corridor Constructors' crews continue to work hard to meet or beat the projected completion date of July 2011."
A SPUI is designed to reduce the number of vehicle conflict points within an interchange and improve mobility. It also requires less land to construct. To see how the new SPUI will operate, visit www.youtube.com and search for "kcICON SPUI" to watch the video.
All construction activities are weather dependent and subject to change. Updated lane closure information can be found on the project's Web site at www.kcicon.com or by calling the information hotline at 816-841-8888.
